How to use the roasting log template

  1. Set it up

Pick your roaster, how often you write a reading down, °C or °F, and the paper.

  2. Print it

Print a stack for your binder, or save it as a PDF. Add a coffee and date to print them on.

  3. Write it down as you go

Bean temperature and your heat and fan settings each row; mark yellow, first crack and drop.

Rather log it online? The manual roast log is the same sheet, with the curve drawn as you type.

What to write down

What the sheet asks for, and what the numbers tell you afterwards.

  • Charge

Bean temperature at charge, in the 0:00 row.

  • Every 30 seconds

Bean temperature and the heat and fan you set.

  • Yellow

When the beans turn from green to yellow: the end of drying.

  • First crack

The time and bean temperature at the first pops.

  • Drop

The time and temperature when the beans leave the roaster.

  • Weights

Green in and roasted out, for the weight loss.

Questions

Is the roasting log template free?

Yes. Print as many sheets as you like, no account needed.

Is this the same as a roasting worksheet?

Yes. Some roasters call it a roasting worksheet: one page with the coffee, target and actual times, a reading every 30 or 60 seconds, weights and tasting notes.

Can I download it as a PDF?

Press Print, then choose Save as PDF in your browser's print dialog. The sheet fits one A4 or US Letter page.

Which roasters is it set up for?

Fresh Roast SR540 and SR800, Behmor, Gene Café, Hottop, drum roasters and popcorn poppers. Each gets its own control columns; Any roaster lets you pick up to three.

What are the target columns for?

Copying a roast you liked before, to roast the next batch against it. Switch them off for more room to write.

Can I log it online instead?

Yes: the manual roast log is the same sheet to type in on any device, and it draws the curve as you type.

I use Artisan or a Roest. Do I need this?

Not for logging: they log the roast for you, so open it in the Artisan or Roest log viewer instead. The sheet is still handy for a binder of beans and tasting notes.

Other tools

Log a roast by hand online instead, or open a roast your roaster's app saved.
